Program Overview

The ECU Gastroenterology Fellowship is a three-year ACGME-accredited program focused on preparing fellows to become skilled, scholarly, and compassionate gastroenterologists.

Note: Each academic year includes 13 blocks (1 block = 4 weeks).


Didactic Education

  • Wednesday Grand Rounds: Weekly 7:30–8:30 AM (Core Curriculum, Journal Club, Path, M&M)
  • Tuesday Board Review: Weekly 7:00–8:00 AM, led by Chief Fellows
  • HPB Multidisciplinary Conference: Thursdays 7:00–8:00 AM
  • GI Tumor Board: Fridays 12:00–1:00 PM

Research Training

Fellows complete:

  • Year 1: Narrative or Systematic Review
  • Year 2: Dataset-based research project
  • Monthly research meetings and ongoing mentorship

Procedural Experience

  • Upper/lower endoscopy (diagnostic and therapeutic)
  • Polypectomy, PEG
  • EMR, EUS, ERCP (Exposure)
  • Motility (manometry, pH-impedance)
  • Video capsule endoscopy

Continuity Clinic

Fellows manage their own patient panels throughout all 3 years, practicing longitudinal care for liver disease, IBD, and general GI conditions.
