Teaching Sites and Statistics


One of the largest health systems in the state, ECU Health comprises nine hospitals with a total of approximately 53,000 admissions and 250,000 Emergency Department visits annually. ECU Health employs over 500 physicians representing all major medical and surgical specialties.

All inpatient neurology services are provided at the medical center’s flagship hospital in Greenville, NC, a 974-bed tertiary care center with over 44,000 admissions annually. The hospital staffs Level I adult and pediatric trauma centers, a comprehensive stroke center, and a 24-bed Neuro-ICU. The hospital contains private patient rooms, private conference rooms for family meetings, lecture halls, on-site libraries, secure/confidential dictation areas, dining facilities, and on-call rooms with showers. ECU Health has contemporary clinical laboratory facilities with computer access to rapidly report the results of laboratory evaluations, including clinicopathological studies. Inpatient EEG and EMG equipment and support services are available. Imaging capabilities at ECU Health include MRI, CT, PET/nuclear medicine, angiography, and ultrasonography. Physicians can access imaging studies and EEG tracings remotely for review.

ECU Health’s ambulatory neurology practice is housed at 2280 Hemby Lane, a 23,000+ square-foot clinic space and five-minute walk from the inpatient campus. The outpatient space contains a phlebotomy laboratory, conference rooms, and ample office space. Examination rooms are equipped with standard medical resources including ophthalmoscopes, equipment for electromyography, and computers with the capacity to access the electronic record and view imaging studies. Faculty offices, a spacious resident work room and offices for support staff are located in the same area.
